Melbourne's own masked DJ, merging grimy house basslines with Egyptian ritual theatrics.
Anubis has always made spaces feel different. As a boy he wired LEDs into his Lego and spliced cassettes by hand, chasing the perfect seam. At sixteen he started as a lighting boy at Chasers Nightclub in Prahran, and over eleven years became production manager for Razor Promotions at Tasty, Savage and Redheads, working The Market Hotel, Inflation and Fantasia, always at the lights beside the DJ. After that the work came home: light sculptures, mixtapes, art given as gifts, and the music at every party he walked into.
Lockdown gave him a new idea: become the art. He first wore Anubis to the Pride March in February 2023, meaning to stay four hours. He got home at three in the morning. People stopped him every few steps for a photo, and a stranger shouted him a ticket to a party that night. It was Spiro’s Where Love Lives, and Nicky Siano was in the room.
Four months later Anubis played its first birthday, and he has been resident ever since, sharing nights with David Morales, Barbara Tucker, DJ Spen and Victor Simonelli. He plays in the moment, reading the floor as it moves, as a DJ or as a VDJ mixing his own film clips with the music. When the mask goes on, the room follows.
"From the booth to the dance floor, DJ Anubis plays with purpose: raw, thoughtful, and always built with connection in mind."
